Background and History

Meridian Hall in Downtown Toronto
Meridian Hall features live artists from around the world
The O'Keefe Centre opened in the fall of 1960 as part of Downtown Toronto's rapidly growing entertainment scene. Born in Great Britain, Peter Dickinson was the head architect for this new performing arts venue in the heart of the city. He designed the facility in the Mid-Century style that was quite common in urban areas worldwide. Unfortunately, Dickinson passed away just one year after his grand project was completed. Canadian artist York Wilson was hired to design a custom mural for the main lobby. Today, the Seven Lively Arts mural still dominates the interior design of the lobby. After 36 years, the O'Keefe Centre became known as the Hummingbird Centre. The venue was temporarily closed for major renovations 11 years after the renaming. By the end of 2010, the Sony Centre for the Performing Arts opened to the public as part of a 50th anniversary celebration. In September of 2019, the venue was renamed to Meridian Hall. The theatre reflects their shared values including support of the arts, diversity and community well-being.
