The Aga Khan Museum has an extensive collection of drawings with ink and opaque watercolors. Some of the etchings include a touch of gold and other precious materials that decorate the frames of the images. Themes depicted in the drawings include lions, caracals, falcons, cheetahs and other animals with great symbolic meanings in Persian and Middle Eastern cultures. The permanent collection includes a variety of signature textiles that were woven by skilled craftsmen in Iran and neighboring countries in Central Asia. Of course, the world-famous Persian tapestries are some of the highlights of the galleries. Decorative pottery and kitchenware from Syria and Iran are on display in the exhibits. You'll also see authentic manuscripts that were written in Persian, Arabic and other variations of Turkic languages that have dominated the region for centuries. Most of the manuscripts at the Aga Khan Museum have religious importance, but some of them display scientific and historical accounts from renowned scholars. Multiple copies of the Quran from different time periods are featured at this museum. One of the religious books was published in Indonesia in the early 19th century. Plaques, bowls, dishes and panels from the Middle East and Persia are other notable artifacts that are part of the museum's permanent collection. Such items retain their beautiful glazing and other intricate patterns that define the signature artistry of Persian and Oriental cultures. Click to book your Toronto tours.
